Milan menswear (and women’s): Gucci’s magical journey

Lauretta Roberts | 21st June 2016

Gucci Resort 17

Gucci showed its menswear (peppered with womenswear) collection in Milan yesterday and, as is now to be expected, it was a riot of colour, embellishment, print, detail and, once your eyes have feasted on that, you will spot some very clear trends which will no doubt see their way onto the high streets of Britain and beyond next Spring.

Creative director Alessandro Michele (apparently inspired this season by journeys) was responsible for the proliferation of silky bombers (many with added kitschy embroidery) for SS16 and for next Spring he provided some key updates for bombers and other key jacket styles.

The bomber was imagined in luxe leather and suede with embroidered and appliquéd detailing (the now familiar Michele themes of tiger’s heads, exotic birds and opulent florals abounded), but the silky version is still going strong for those now convinced to take the plunge.

For those who have already invested in a bomber, Michele served up some interesting alternatives adding his trademark flair to bikers which featured intricate floral patterns, as well as a neat shrunken blazer with contrast edging and a bright western-style jacked with embroidery (of course) and a bow at the neck (a styling detail also shown on the women’s looks). Given the amount of rain we’ve been having lately the bright fisherman’s-style rain coats with matching hoods were a timely addition to the outerwear offer.

The key trouser shape was a sporty jogger with side stripe and the acid wash denim, which was such a hit at the recent women’s Resort 17 collection shown at Westminster Abbey, was in evidence for men too and will surely be a big theme of high street denim updates next Spring (or maybe sooner).

The women’s looks shown were a continuation of the trends seen at Westiminster Abbey. Again, note the details of the multiple ankle strap shoes, the footless tights and the power prints as these will all be key trend influencers.
