Edward Enninful named editor in chief of British Vogue

Lauretta Roberts | 10th April 2017

Edward Enninful OBE has been named as the new editor in chief of British Vogue replacing Alexandra Schulman who leaves the publication after 25 years’ service this June.

Enninful, who began his fashion career at the age of 16 when he was scouted as a model, is one of the industry’s most influential fashion directors. He was appointed fashion director at i-D at the age of just 19 and has since gone on to work at Italian Vogue, American Vogue and, most recently, W Magazine; he has also acted as a consultant for a number of high profile campaigns. He was awarded an OBE for services to the fashion industry last year.

Conde Nast International chairman and chief executive Jonathan Newhouse said of Enninful, whose connections and influence stretch beyond fashion into Hollywood and music: “by virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”

Schulman revealed earlier this year that she intended to stand down just after completing a landmark year at the publication, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016 with a host of initiatives including a gala dinner, exhibition, commemorative book and BBC2 documentary.

Speculation about a potential successor began almost immediately with hot favourites assumed to be deputy editor Emily Sheffield, super-stylist Katie Grand and fashion director of The Telegraph Lisa Armstrong. Enninful’s name had not been linked strongly with the role but his appointment, though perhaps not widely expected, looks inspired.
